纖維材料包括天然纖維和合成纖維。纖維材料可用于各種復合材料中增加復合材料的強度,而強度的大小又與表面能量息息相關。因此表面能的表征不容忽視。表面能常使用的表征方法是反氣相色譜法。英國SMS儀器公司開發的反氣相色譜法表面能分析儀(IGC-sea)是第三代先進儀器。是區別于反氣相色譜儀,專門用于表面能表征的儀器。它不僅可以給到表面能色散分量,極性分量和總能量,還能給到表面能隨覆蓋度的變化趨勢,對纖維表面能作充分的表征。
